WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A barking dog is getting credit for saving a family from a fire in their West Des Moines home.

Des Moines television station KCCI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1nLHLst ) that the 7-year-old Shih Tzu, Daisey, awoke Kaylee Funaro after the fire started shortly after 2 a.m. Friday.

Funaro and her parents escaped from the house and called authorities before the smoke detectors went off. The advance warning gave firefighters enough time to contain the blaze to the garage.

The garage and cars sustained $70,000 worth of damage. The home sustained minor smoke damage.

Firefighters were able to save the family’s 21-year-old cat, Toby, from the fire.
