BERLIN, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation is holding a public meeting on a petition to ban recreational use of Berlin Pond, including fishing, boating and swimming.

The state will take public comment on the Citizens to Protect Berlin Pond petition on Tuesday night from 6 to 8 at Berlin Elementary School.

The petition is different than one submitted last summer by the city of Montpelier which requested some activities be prohibited, mostly the use of internal combustion engines, including ice augers. Motor boats are already banned.

The state Supreme court ruled in 2012 that Montpelier, which acquired most of the land around the source of its drinking water, didn’t have the authority to keep people from fishing, swimming or kayaking there.
