YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - Yankton police say an officer shot a pit bull after the dog bit a runner three times and then charged the officer.

Chief Brian Paulsen tells the Daily Press & Dakotan (https://bit.ly/1nPqXkk ) that the dog bit the runner Monday morning, then became aggressive toward one of the two officers who responded.

The dog is being sent to a state lab in Pierre for rabies testing.

The runner was treated at a Yankton hospital and released.
