BOURNE, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say an inmate who died at the Barnstable County jail last week had opiates in his system at the time.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said Tuesday that the death of 31-year-old John Shannon remains under investigation and it’s too early to say whether it was an overdose.

Shannon was found in his cell by a guard early last Friday. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A number of people with Shannon before his death, including his cellmate, who had recently been transferred to the jail from Orleans District Court, are being interviewed.

Sheriff James Cummings tells the Cape Cod Times (https://bit.ly/1pxqqEG ) the problem of inmates smuggling drugs into the jail is ongoing.
