BANGOR, Maine (AP) - An Old Town man has been sentenced to almost five years in prison for his role in a drug distribution ring.

Federal prosecutors say 27-year-old Matthew Tardiff was also sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Bangor to three years of probation.

Tardiff pleaded guilty in January to charges of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute the drug commonly referred to as bath salts.

Authorities say Tardiff obtained the drug from other people involved in the ring and then traded, sold or distributed it throughout Penobscot County in 2011 from his Old Town residence using cellphones.

A total of 14 people were arrested in the case.
