BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A southwestern Illinois sheriff says a man jailed on charges of home invasion and armed robbery hanged himself in his cell.

St. Clair County Sheriff Rick Watson tells the Belleville News-Democrat (https://bit.ly/1mmtGAI) that 33-year-old Bradley Scarpi of Belleville was found dead Friday. Watson says Scarpi’s death came just hours after he had been moved into a protective-custody cell because “he was having some issues.”

Watson says Scarpi had been housed in the Belleville jail 10 times previously and was considered a “model inmate.” The sheriff says Scarpi had never been on suicide watch and never indicated he was considering taking his own life.

Cindy Files, Scarpi’s sister, says her brother “had his demons,” namely drugs.
