BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Jefferson County sheriff’s officials say the department is teaming up with a nonprofit to offer children a children’s safety and self-defense summer camp.

Authorities said in a statement Wednesday that Sheriff Mike Hale is offering four, week long sessions of a summer day camp titled “Prepared, Not Scared,” for students entering grades 5 through 7.

Officials say instructors from Fresh Air Family and Hoover Tactical Firearms will teach students how to respond to several emergency situations - including an active shooter in a school building. Children will also be taught how to forage for food, perform first aid and more.

The camp is being offered in June and July, and will be hosted at the Oak Mountain State Park, the Red Mountain Park and the Trussville Athletic Center.
