CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Northern Nevada Development Authority and Nye County have been awarded a combined $1.2 million in federal grants to clean up and redevelop contaminated properties.

Funding comes from Brownfields Grants announced Wednesday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Nevada projects were among 171 communities chosen nationwide for funding.

Northern Nevada Development Authority will receive $600,000 for assessment work at hazardous sites in Churchill and Lyon counties.

Nye County is receiving a similar amount for environmental assessment work and cleanup planning.

Brownfields funding is designed to assist communities in cleaning up polluted, unused sites and redeveloping the property for sustainable use.
