AURORA, Colo. (AP) - Police Chief Dan Oates has ended his tenure in Aurora.

The Denver Post reports (https://bit.ly/1nz2WSV ) that Oates’ last day was Thursday. He is heading to the Miami Beach to head that south Florida city’s police department. Oates joined the Aurora department in November 2005 after being the chief in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The 57-year-old Oates’ received high praise for his department’s quick response to the Aurora theater shootings in July 2012.

Aurora officials are conducting a national search and hope to have a permanent police chief by the end of the year or in early 2015.

Deputy Police Chief Terry Jones will take over as interim chief.
