NEWMARKET, England (AP) - Night of Thunder produced a huge upset in the 2,000 Guineas by winning the first classic of the English flat-racing season at odds of 40-1 on Saturday.

Trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by Kieren Fallon, Night of Thunder drifted across the course at Newmarket and delivered a late burst to win by half a length from Kingman, the 6-4 favorite.

Australia (5-2) placed third in the mile-long (1,600-meter) race for 3-year-olds.

It was Fallon’s fifth win in the 2,000 Guineas - and his first since 2006.

Fallon, a six-time champion jockey, says “I thought he’d given it away, but he’s a good horse and hopefully he can continue.”

It was a first classic winner for Hannon.
