FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) - Sumatra led wire-to-wire in the $115,370 Dexter Cup for 3-year-old trotters at Freehold Raceway, beating Derby by 2¼ lengths.

Driven by Brian Sears and trained by Tom Fanning, the gelding ran the mile in 1:57.4 and returned $2.60 $2.20 and $2.10. Sumatra is eligible for the $1.2 million Hambletonian, harness racing’s most prestigious race, which will be held at the Meadowlands on Aug. 2.

Sent off as the 1-5 betting favorite on Saturday, Sumatra started from the inside post one and faced little pressure through most of the race. He then drew off in the homestretch to seal the win.
