BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Minot Air Force Base has organized a weekend event aimed at helping children understand what deploying parents go through.

The “Operation Heroes” project for children ages 12 and up is Saturday at the Airman and Family Readiness Center on base. Participants will go through a mock deployment.

The children will first get backpacks, immunization records and dog tags. Then they’ll take part in a simulated mission in a made-up country called KIDakastan. They’ll even get to taste field rations.
