LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard has tested Winona State University’s new floating classroom.

The boat passed the test at the SkipperLiner Marine in La Crosse Thursday. The Coast Guard placed 450-pound barrels of water throughout the vessel to simulate passengers.

The unconventional classroom was inspired by Dr. Calvin Fremling, a Winona State professor, scientist and river enthusiast who died in 2010. The boat is expected to provide hands-on education about the Mississippi River to regional students of every age. They’ll take water samples and identify river species, among other things.

WXOW-TV (https://bit.ly/1wyyCtc ) says the Cal Fremling will be christened on June 6 at Levee Park in Winona, Minnesota.
