DANVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A police officer has been shot and wounded in eastern Illinois.

Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason says the officer was hospitalized with injuries that were not life threatening.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1mCNKis ) that the shooting happened Friday evening.

The officer approached an individual who turned and fired. The officer was hit and fired back, but police don’t know if the shooter was injured.

The suspect fled on foot and was not immediately found.
