INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis police say a 13-year-old boy apparently drowned after he slipped on the banks of the White River in the middle of the night and plunged into the river.

Police spokesman Christopher Wilburn tells The Indianapolis Star (https://indy.st/1nDneKN ) rescue divers recovered Micah Strong’s body about 3 a.m. Saturday, some three hours after he was last seen by his friends submerged in the river.

Strong’s friends flagged down an Indianapolis police officer for help after he fell into the river late Friday just southwest of downtown.

Eight divers and two boats were searched for the teen before his body was found. Fire officials say their efforts were hampered by a strong current and debris along the river bottom.
