MITTIE, La. (AP) - Reflective green mile markers like those along highways have been set out along a scenic waterway in Allen Parish to help rescuers find lost or injured boaters.

The American Press (https://bit.ly/Sm2g4P ) reports that there are 16 of the markers on the 8.5-mile stretch of the Ouiska Chitto, also called the Whiskey Chitto. They start at the Ouiska Chitto bridge just west of Oberlin and end at North Carpenter’s bridge.

Allen Parish District 3 Fire Chief Les Kolb says last year, the district answered calls there about a broken neck, five broken legs and several missing people, including a family who got lost after dark.

He says some rescues took too long.

Kolb says the mile markers and new maps should help.
