DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - Siblings scattered over two continents have joined in Dubuque after decades apart.

Richard Asbell of Dubuque welcomed three brothers from Landshut, Germany, and a sister from Kansas City on Sunday, according to the Telegraph Herald (https://bit.ly/1mvfZUO ).

“It’s a good feeling,” Asbell said. “It fills my heart.”

The siblings were among nine children born to the Reinhardt family. Two were sent to the United States with adoptive parents more than 50 years ago because their parents couldn’t afford such a large family.

Asbell, 50, said he’s always known he was adopted.

“My (adopted) dad told me before he passed away: ‘You need to find your biological family,’” Asbell said. “I did some research, but then kind of gave up.”

His siblings were doing the same thing, trying to track down their brother by research on the Internet. They had more success.

Asbell said he first learned the specifics upon receiving an email in 2012 from a sister in Europe.

After hearing from his family, Asbell made a trip last spring to Landshut, a city in Bavaria. He was shocked by the family resemblance.

“It was like looking in a mirror,” he said.

Although the siblings in Germany had known about Asbell for some time, it was only recently that they found their sister, Donna Burton, 55, of Kansas City.

“I knew I had a (biological) family, but I didn’t know they were looking for me,” Burton said.

Brothers Roland Reinhardt, 54, Hermann Reinhardt, 44, and Alex Reinhardt, 41, made the trip to Iowa.

The siblings will spend 10 days together, with plans to explore Dubuque, eastern Iowa and the Chicago area.

Asked about what it meant to meet his brother and sister, Hermann Reinhardt patted his chest.

“It’s a big feeling - happy,” he said.
