LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a truck crash spilled thousands of gallons of liquid asphalt and closed a stretch of freeway in the Lansing area, sending two people to the hospital.

The crash early Monday forced officials to close eastbound Interstate 96. Other area traffic was affected as crews responded.

WLNS-TV and WWJ-AM report the tanker truck was carrying liquid asphalt when it rolled, spilling its load. The Ingham County sheriff’s department says the driver and another motorist were injured and taken to a hospital.

Authorities say the crash spilled 5,000 to 10,000 gallons of liquid asphalt. Another truck was brought in to off-load the material. The Lansing State Journal reports the truck was hauling 10,500 gallons.

MLive.com reports a cable barrier in the median kept the truck from going into oncoming traffic.
