NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a whale has been found dead in New York Harbor.

The roughly 25-foot-long animal was spotted floating in the water near the Brooklyn Army Terminal around 10 a.m. Monday.

Eddie Lopez tells the Daily News he was walking his dog when he saw what looked like debris floating about 40 feet from a pier. He says that as he drew closer, he realized it was a carcass and saw a slash by the mammal’s dorsal fin.

The New York Police Department’s Harbor Unit and the federal Army Corps of Engineers were involved in getting the whale to the New Jersey side of the harbor and onto a barge.

Experts from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation are expected to examine the whale. They aren’t immediately reachable.
