ELSMERE, Del. (AP) - Delaware fire officials say firefighters rescued a man critically injured in a house fire in Elsmere.

Firefighters were called to the home on Harvey Place on Sunday and found thick smoke coming from the second floor of the home.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office says the 56-year-old man was found unconscious on the second floor of the home. Officials say he was taken to the burn unit at Keystone Crozier Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania, and admitted in critical condition with smoke inhalation and burns.

Officials say a second resident alerted by a working smoke alarm and was able to flee.

The fire marshal’s office says damage was estimated at $10,000 and the origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.
