OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - An Oklahoma appeals court has upheld the life in prison sentence of a man convicted of first-degree murder for killing his 15-month-old son.

The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals handed down the ruling Monday in the case of 24-year-old Mark Christopher Nichols of Catoosa. Nichols was convicted by a jury in Wagoner County of first-degree child-abuse murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Nichols was charged in the death of his 15-month-old son, Maverick. Authorities say the child died from blunt force trauma to the back of the skull as well as the right side of the head. The child also suffered a broken rib.

Nichols‘ defense attorney, Michael Morehead of the Oklahoma Indigent Defense System, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
