DUBLIN, Calif. (AP) - Police say an officer fatally shot a baseball bat-wielding man who attacked after the officer responded to a domestic disturbance call in Northern California.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/RhwFRF ) that the shooting occurred Sunday in Dublin, after officers responded to reports of an 18-year-old man who physically assaulted his mother and was having a mental breakdown.

Police say when an officer arrived on scene the suspect was seen holding the bat, and attacked.

Dublin police Lt. Herb Walters says the officer felt his life was in immediate danger and fired several rounds at the man, who died at the scene.

Neither the officer nor the suspect was identified.

The officer is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the department and Alameda County district attorney’s office.
