COPIAGUE, N.Y. (AP) - Suffolk County police have rescued two men who became stranded for nearly 30 hours in the Great South Bay on Long Island in a newly purchased sailboat.

Thirty-nine-year-old Luis Cosme and 46-year-old Jose Llanos, both from the Bronx, were discovered about 7 p.m. Sunday, more than a day after they ran their 24-foot sailboat aground about 1,000 feet west of Elder Island in Copiague.

Police with the Marine Bureau say the two purchased the sailboat around 3 p.m. Saturday in Bay Shore and set sail for City Island in the Bronx. They became stranded about 90 minutes later.

A resident who lives across from Elder Island noticed the boat Sunday afternoon and contacted police.

Cosme and Llano have been treated for exposure by the Copiague Fire Department.
