FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - A homeless man has been sentenced to life in prison over the death of his pregnant girlfriend whose body was dumped in a North Texas field.

Prosecutors in Fort Worth on Monday announced the penalty for 22-year-old Johnny Calvin Scott Jr.

A Tarrant County jury convicted Scott of capital murder in the August 2012 death of 22-year-old Vanessa Murrell. Investigators say the woman, who was about three months pregnant, had her throat slashed and was strangled.

Scott’s DNA was under Murrell’s fingernails. He told investigators that the couple argued.

Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty. Scott received an automatic life prison term when sentenced Friday.

Officials with the district attorney’s office on Monday did not immediately say whether Scott was believed to be the father of the unborn child.
