RAMSEY, N.J. (AP) - One person was seriously injured when a tire smashed through the windshield of a commuter bus in northern New Jersey.

The accident happened Monday morning on Route 17 southbound in Ramsey.

The Record (https://bit.ly/1ikfIfc) reports the bus, operated by Pine Hill Trailways, was carrying 50 passengers, the driver and another company employee as it traveled to New York City.

The tire somehow came off of a car traveling northbound on Route 17, then bounced over the center divider and struck the bus, breaking through the windshield where the driver was seated.

A 49-year-old Rosendale, New York man who was seated directly behind the bus driver suffered a severe head injury and was hospitalized in critical condition. The bus driver and two other passengers were treated for minor injuries.
