NEWARK, Del. (AP) - The Delaware State Police says a second person is dead after a single-car crash that happened over the weekend in Newark.

State Police said the crash in the area of Old Baltimore Pike and the Christina Bypass happened Saturday evening. The driver of the car, 77-year-old John Dorris Jr. of Newark, was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, 72-year-old Georgene Dorris, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

State Police say she died Sunday morning.

Police are still investigating the accident. Witnesses told troopers that they saw John Dorris driving erratically on the shoulder of the roadway before he struck two pedestrian crossing signals, left the roadway, struck an embankment and then hit a girder.

It was not clear what caused him to be driving erratically.
