ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a man charged with killing a suburban Rochester music teacher more than 20 years ago has died in prison.

The attorney for 61-year-old Edward Laraby tells local media that he died Sunday at Wende Correctional Facility in Alden, outside Buffalo, New York.

Monroe County prosecutors say in 2012 Laraby confessed to strangling 27-year-old Stephanie Kupchynsky, a popular music teacher from the town of Greece who disappeared in 1991.

Laraby was a maintenance worker at Kupchynsky’s suburban Rochester apartment complex when she disappeared. Her skeletal remains were discovered in a creek bed in rural Orleans County seven years later.

Laraby was charged with her murder but never went on trial because of his deteriorating health due to Lou Gehrig’s disease.
