HOBE SOUND, Fla. (AP) - Fire officials will be conducting prescribed burns at two state parks in Martin County.

The burns will be handled by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound and Savannas Preserve State Park in Jensen Beach. Both will take place on Tuesday, weather permitting.

About 600 acres of pine flatwoods in the middle of the Jonathan Dickinson State Park will be burned, while 270 acres of scrub and pine flatwoods will be burned at Savannas Preserve State Park.

Fire officials say prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles to restore healthy forests and natural communities, reduce undergrowth that accumulates over time and decreases the potential for wildfire. Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.
