BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Growers in southern Illinois say the strawberry season is delayed this spring.

Vince Demange Sr. is with Demange Farm outside of Belleville. He tells the Belleville News-Democrat (https://bit.ly/1g6l39T ) that a harsh winter has made his strawberry harvest about two weeks late. Strawberries are usually ripe by Mother’s Day but this year it’s looking like they won’t be ready until Memorial Day.

Demange says there was “too much frost and freeze.” He says there are no ripe berries yet.

Jean Hoeffken with Scharf Farm in Millstadt says her plants are nothing but blooms. And Donahue’s Sunshine Farms in Collinsville says the strawberry crop “will be late this year.”
