LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A 50-year-old former Ingham County township official has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to shooting his 79-year-old father.

The Lansing State Journal reports (https://on.lsj.com/1o70MJ9 ) that Greg Basolo of Meridian Township made the plea Wednesday in Ingham County Circuit Court. An agreement with prosecutors requires Basolo to spend at least 25 years in prison but he can receive mental health treatment.

Seventy-nine-year-old Peter Basolo was shot Oct. 25 at the Lansing-area condo he shared with his son. Basolo admitted to the killing of the former Michigan State Police captain at previous hearings.

Basolo says he was angry because his father re-established contact with relatives who sexually assaulted the son in the past.

Defense attorney Patrick Crowley says the plea was Basolo’s choice.
