LYNDON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont ranch owner has pleaded not guilty to 21 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty after police said they found dead and emaciated horses on his property in March.

Sixty-four-year-old Bruce Bona of Lyndon was released on condition that he not possess or care for any animals. He plans to represent himself.

The Caledonian Record reports (https://bit.ly/1oa0Mbo) the Caledonia County Sheriff’s Department found three dead and 21 emaciated horses nibbling on manure and wood.

The horses were removed and placed in animal foster homes or adopted.

Bona told police he had recently suffered a heart attack that prevented him from being more active in caring for the horses.
