DURANT, Iowa (AP) - Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting in the small eastern Iowa city of Durant.

The state Department of Public Safety says the incident occurred Thursday night, after authorities received a 911 call of a possible disturbance at a residence.

Police from various departments arrived at the residence and found 42-year-old Scott Douglas Oetzel barricaded inside.

Special Agent Richard Rahn of the state Department of Criminal Investigation says Oetzel was not responding to directions to come out. Authorities entered after hearing a gunshot.

Oetzel was found dead inside. An autopsy with the state medical examiner’s office has been scheduled for Saturday in Ankeny.

Authorities say a female resident was assaulted by Oetzel and managed to escape. She was treated at a hospital and released.
