PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The company planning to build a wind farm off Block Island has received its first permits.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1mHYVeq ) the state Department of Environmental Management had approved water quality certificates to allow dredging and other marine construction activities.

The company plans to build five turbines off the island and needs the permits to begin construction on them and the transmission cable that will connect Block Island to Narragansett.

Deepwater is still awaiting approval for the project from the Army Corps of Engineers and the state Coastal Resources Management Council, the lead state permitting agency for the project.

The council is set to meet Tuesday and a subcommittee has recommended approving the plan.
