ARCADIA, La. (AP) - Former Gibsland Mayor Odell Key has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to malfeasance in office.

State District Judge Glenn Fallin sentenced Key on Friday to three years in prison - two years suspended - and an additional two years of supervised probation upon completion of the prison term. The 73-year-old Key also was fined $5,000 and ordered to pay court costs.

Key pleaded guilty in February to one felony count of malfeasance after a May 2013 state legislative audit showed the town’s financial records were missing and that it owed $80,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.

Kurt Wall, director of the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office’s Criminal Division, prosecuted the case. He says hopefully the conviction will give the town the fresh start it needs to move forward.
