PURVIS, Miss. (AP) - Matthew Dillon will be the next superintendent of the Petal school district.

The school board announced the selection Friday.

Dillon is currently assistant superintendent of the Tupelo school district. He’s been a teacher, as well as junior high school and high school principal.

Current Petal Superintendent John Buchanan is retiring June 1 after five years as the leader of the 4,000-student district, which has an “A’’ rating in the state’s grading system.

Dillon earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Southern Mississippi and masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Mississippi.
