MILWAUKEE (AP) - The first major winter storm of the season is barreling through northwestern Wisconsin, dumping more than a foot of snow in places.

The National Weather Service reports 14 inches of snow in Glidden, 12 inches in Foxboro, 10.5 inches in Oakland and 7.5 inches in Hawthorne as of Monday evening.

The falling snow is making roads slick as motorists head out for the start of the work week. Forecasters expect the highest accumulations in Polk, Barron and Rusk counties through Tuesday evening. Eight to 16 inches of snow is likely across north-central Wisconsin, with the highest amounts closer to upper Michigan.

Forecasters said additional significant snowfall is possible along portions of the southern shore of Lake Superior from Tuesday night into at least Wednesday, resulting in even higher snowfall totals.
