AQUEBOGUE, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a homemade ultralight helicopter had to make an emergency landing on a sod farm on Long Island.

It happened Sunday afternoon in Aquebogue.

Police say the 71-year-old pilot, Erwin Rodger, of Mattituck, was found unconscious outside the helicopter covered in gasoline.



Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/10PsG3h ) says he escaped serious injury and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The aircraft developed mechanical problems and landed north of Vineyard Way behind a residential neighborhood

Police say Rodger built the Mosquito ultralight helicopter himself.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
