ELGIN, Iowa (AP) - A northern Iowa man faces charges on suspicion of starting a fire while trying to steal gasoline.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says Aaron Hickman, of Postville, faces charges of second-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal mischief. Court records do not list an attorney.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (https://bit.ly/144UAKp ) Hickman is accused of drilling a hole in a van’s tank in Elgin on Oct. 23 in an attempt to steal gasoline. The fuel ignited in the process, causing the van to catch fire. A nearby building also sustained damage.

Authorities say Hickman left the scene and drove to Clermont to try to steal gas again from another vehicle.
