GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - A Forestville man has pleaded guilty to impersonating a federal officer.

Fifty-three-year-old Joseph Lewis entered the plea Monday in federal court in Greenbelt. He faces a maximum of three years in prison at sentencing on Feb. 13.

According to his plea agreement, in December 2012, Lewis called 911 after he tried to conduct a traffic stop on Suitland Parkway in Prince George’s County and the driver ran away.

Prosecutors say Lewis told the U.S. Park Police dispatcher that he was an off-duty Department of Defense Police officer. When Park Police officers arrived, Lewis showed them DOD police credentials and a police badge.

Prosecutors say Lewis, who also had semi-automatic handgun, was not a DOD police officer and was not authorized to carry police credentials, a police badge or a firearm.
