PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says the state Division of Criminal Investigation will look into the weekend shooting of a woman by a Mitchell police officer.
That is standard procedure when a law officer is involved in a shooting.
Authorities say Mitchell police responded to a motel Saturday evening for reports of a woman armed with a gun who was drunk and threatening to hurt herself and others. Jackley says Police Sgt. David Beintema shot 52-year-old Jay Ann Sherman, of Mitchell.
Mitchell Public Safety Chief Lyndon Overweg said earlier that Sherman was shot after she pointed the gun at officers. She was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital. Jackley’s office did not have any information on her condition Monday.
