ETTRICK, Va. (AP) - Virginia State sophomore quarterback Tarian Ayres has been suspended from the team for a violation of team rules, meaning he will miss the CIAA championship game.
Multiple media outlets cited a news release from the school which said there would be no additional comment.
The Trojans (8-2, 7-0 CIAA) face Winston-Salem State (9-1, 7-0 CIAA) in the league title game in Durham on Saturday.
It’s the second straight year the two schools have been involved in controversy prior to the championship game.
Last November, a bathroom fight among football players from the two schools during a luncheon left the Rams’ quarterback injured. The title game scheduled for the next day was canceled.
Virginia State’s Lamont Britt pleaded guilty in April to a charge of simple assault.
