CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - The Cranston Police Department is being examined for national accreditation with a parking ticket scandal and two gender discrimination lawsuits looming in the background.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1xH5RcR ) that two examiners from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies arrived at police headquarters Monday for an assessment.

The department has been accredited for three years and a routine reaccreditation review has begun. The commission looks at policy and procedures, administration, operations and support services.

Police Chief Michael J. Winquist says the examiners are aware of challenges such as the scandal over allegations that tickets were issued in the wards of two Democratic City Council members who voted against a proposed police labor contract.

Residents and others may speak about the accreditation standards at a 5 p.m. meeting Tuesday
