LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) - A jury has started deliberations in the trial of a former high-ranking member of a Roman Catholic religious order charged with molesting a boy in Massachusetts decades ago.

The Rev. Richard McCormick is facing five counts of child rape stemming from alleged assaults on a boy that prosecutors say took place during the summers of 1981 and 1982 at a camp in Ipswich operated by the Salesian Society of North America.

The Lawrence Superior Court jury started deliberating Monday and will resume Wednesday.

The Salem News (https://bit.ly/1tCrGpM) reports that the 73-year-old McCormick’s attorney said in closing statements Monday his client’s accuser is motivated by money and there’s no evidence McCormick committed the crimes of which he is charged.

Prosecutors say the alleged victim had no reason to lie about what happened.
