PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Residents in Pascagoula may vote in March 2015 on a proposal to add a 2 percent tax on the sale of prepared food.

The Mississippi Press reports (https://bit.ly/1xEcqgm ) the proposal is designed to generate money for recreation projects in the Jackson County community.

City officials say the proposed tax has been discussed for years and would bring in up to $935,000 a year.

The money would be used to pay off a $10 million bond over 20 years.

The City Council has taken no action yet but council members say they are considering putting the proposal on the March 24 ballot.

If approved by voters, the tax would affect all businesses that sell prepared food, including fast food and sit-down restaurants, grocery stores and convenience stores.
