SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A man has pleaded guilty in the death of a man who was strangled in a downtown San Antonio hotel room.

The San Antonio Express-News (https://bit.ly/1skWZpu ) reports 36-year-old Ivan Cruz Aguilar accepted a plea deal Thursday that will restrict his sentencing range to between five and 30 years in prison. Without the plea agreement, he could have faced up to life in prison had a jury found him guilty.

Forty-two-year-old Vincent Mark Diaz was killed two days before Christmas 2013. The two had met at a bar hours earlier. Diaz was in town from California to attend a funeral.

According to court documents, it wasn’t till Diaz failed to show up at the services that his body was found at the hotel.

Aguilar is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
