KEENE, N.Y. (AP) - Two fire towers in the Adirondacks are a step closer to becoming open to the public.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation on Friday released the final unit management plans for the Hurricane Mountain Fire Tower Historic Area and the St. Regis Mountain Fire Tower Historic Area. That clears the way for work to begin on the two 35-foot fire towers next summer.
The Hurricane Mountain fire tower was discontinued for use as an observation station in 1979. The St. Regis Mountain fire tower was shut down in 1990.
The state will work on the towers with the Friends of St. Regis Mountain Fire Tower and the Hurricane Mountain Fire Tower Friend’s Group.
