PENNINGTON, N.J. (AP) - Attempted murder charges were filed against a man who allegedly stabbed a female relative at an apartment complex and then kept police at bay for several hours.

Pennington police tell The Times of Trenton (https://bit.ly/1GEJLgZ) that 35-year-old borough resident Corey Mitchell also faces weapons charges stemming from the stabbing, which occurred around 9:10 p.m. Saturday in a third-floor hallway at the Hopewell Gardens apartment complex.

Police say Mitchell stabbed the 44-year-old woman multiple times, but didn’t say what sparked the confrontation. She was being treated at a hospital, but further details on her injuries were not disclosed.

Following the stabbing, Mitchell allegedly barricaded himself inside the apartment where he lives with his mother, who was not home at the time. Authorities spent about four hours trying to negotiate Mitchell’s surrender before they forced entry into the unit early Sunday and arrested him.

Several residents were evacuated to other areas of the apartment building as a precaution while the negotiations were ongoing, but they were allowed to return to their homes shortly after Mitchell was taken in to custody.

Mitchell was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being taken to the Mercer County jail, where he was being held on $250,000 bail. It was not known Sunday if he has retained an attorney.
