CHICAGO (AP) - An Indiana man who authorities say engaged in a fatal shootout with Chicago police is being held without bond.

Brown is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery.

He allegedly fired from a window Tuesday as officers approached an apartment building in the Englewood neighborhood on the city’s South Side. Bullets struck 58-year-old police Captain Ed Kukbuda in the head and shoulder. The officer was released from the hospital.

Another man, Dan Jackson, was killed.

An assistant public defender said Friday that Brown is a Gulf War veteran who is bipolar and has post-traumatic stress disorder.
