In one of the oddest moments of this election cycle, the debate between GOP Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Democrat Charlie Crist was briefly delayed Wednesday evening after Mr. Scott objected to Mr. Crist’s use of a fan onstage to keep cool.

“Are we really gonna debate about a fan, or are we going to talk about education and the environment and the future of our state?” Mr. Crist said beforehand. “I mean, really.”

The Scott campaign contended that the rules of the debate said electronic devices could not be used.

“Ladies and gentlemen, that has to be the most unique beginning to any debate. Not only in Florida, but I think in the country,” Elliot Rodriguez, a CBS4 anchor and the debate host, said once Mr. Scott finally did emerge.

Recent polls show a neck-and-neck race between Mr. Scott, the incumbent, and Mr. Crist, a former governor and former Republican.
