Democratic Sens. Chris Murphy, Dianne Feinstein and Richard Blumenthal are leading a charge to press Kroger grocery to ban all open carry of firearms in their stores.

The trio wrote to Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen: “As you know, gun extremists in several states have exploited the current Kroger policy by flaunting assault rifles as they shopped. These bizarre displays must be terrifying for Kroger employees and customers,” The Blaze reported.

They asked Kroger to implement a ban, saying it’s ridiculous that grocery shoppers need to be armed to the teeth.

“There is simply no reason why someone would need an AK-47 to purchase milk, bread or other basic necessities at a grocery story,” they wrote, The Blaze reported. “However, the current Kroger policy allows for these demonstrations.”

Other chains — including Target, Chipotle, Starbucks and Panera Bread — have recently changed or mulled changes to open carry policies.
